My name is Offer Kuban, and currently I call Winnipeg, Manitoba “home”. I grew up mostly in Vancouver, British Columbia, and photography and writing have been a big part of my life ever since I was a kid. I couldn’t have been more than 10 years old, when my uncle Max put my first camera in my hands.
I remember it was a Kodak Instamatic 100, and I was immediately hooked. It’s easy being a dreamer when you’re little. You think the world is patiently waiting just for you to discover it. Stories and story-telling were favourites of mine, too. Who doesn’t love being captivated by a good story? I particularly liked making up my own and writing them down, and it wasn’t long before I was to learn that something magical happened when word and image fell together.
Throughout the course of my adult life, I have walked many different paths along my journey. Despite that, or perhaps because of it, I seem to have always returned to my first loves: the image and the word. I’ve dreamt of traveling the world, photographing its simple mysteries and its grand wonders, of writing and publishing, perhaps fulfilling the notion that once a small boy and his little camera could one day become a man to see and speak of the world he witnessed.
The next page is blank and waiting. The next subject to shoot is yet to be seen. The journey continues.
